Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire versions announced – FSPR81

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

The Pokémon Company International (and Arceus) have finally answered our wishes of remaking Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. These new games for the 3DS, titled Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, will be released worldwide in November 2014.

Rene and I discussed our hopes and speculation about the upcoming remakes. Many of the Internet’s speculations have already been noted in a blog post by FossilJockeyMG of Team Knockout titled Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Conjecture. Do Groudon and Kyogre have alternate or Mega formes? Will we be able to explore new areas in the Hoenn region? Will the Secret Bases return? It’s still too early to tell what features will be available in the game.

More discussion about Nintendo’s future

For the past couple of episodes of Pokédex Radio, we have been discussing the future of Nintendo and what they have planned for their own future. In the middle of all of our speculation, an IGN article titled Nintendo Working on New Consoles For Emerging Markets was published discussing just that. Rene and I were a little confused as to what “emerging markets” means and to what this “new console” may be. We’re hoping that it’s not a stripped down version of the Wii U (similar to the Wii mini), which Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says it will not be.

Iwata also seems to be hesitant to move towards the idea of developing applications for smartphones, which is even more confusing because Nintendo is looking into making an smartphone app for Mario Kart 8 tentatively titled Mario Kart TV. According to an article on Mac Rumors titled Nintendo Unveils New Web-Based Service for Smartphones, this app will allow players to upload videos, see friend activity and establish their ranking with Mario Kart 8.

PokéPress interview with Kyle Hebert

Another installment of PokéPress is featured in this episode of Pokédex Radio. This time, Steven Reich interviews voice actor Kyle Hebert. Hebert is known for playing adult and teen Gohan in the Dragon Ball series, Ralph in the Disney movie Wreck-It Ralph, Kiba Inuzuka from Naruto. Because this is a Pokémon podcast, it’s crucial that we know he also plays Professor Oak in the Pokémon Origins series.

  1. I wonder how this will turn out its graphics and scaling look similar to pokemon X and Y. what are your hopes for the game.

    • It’s most likely going to run on the same engine as X and Y. That’s what they’ve always done for remakes within a generation. Fire Red and Leaf Green looked similar to Ruby and Sapphire. Heart Gold and Soul Silver looked similar to Diamond and Pearl. Of course, they are going to update the tiles and sprites, but it’s going to be the same graphics engine without a doubt. Thanks for your comment, Etho!

  2. Austin,
    Great show as always.
Great purchase of Ocarina of Time 3ds by the way. OOT/much like Pokemon Yellow, is just one of those games I have to play-through at least once a year for old times sake. 2 of my favorites of all time. Enjoy!!

    Question of the EP:
Some food for thought…2 Big Points
This will be the second group of games released that will be compatible with the Pokemon Bank… This will also be the first group of remakes that will ALSO have backend access to the original versions. Meaning Pokemon from original R/S/E are already waiting for me since I used the transfer sequences through gen 4 and 5 to the PokeBank. So what problem does this cause for Nintendo? Hardcore Pokemon trainers like us with all older generations, already have Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, the Lati’s and the Regi’s in the Bank! Collecting the Hoenne legendaries may not be enough to sell all of us on the game like it did for Kanto and Johto.

Don’t get me wrong… I’ll be buying them (Pika Pika Pika), but consider this. Gen 3 broke the first chain, which made FireRed/LeafGreen and HeartGold/SoulSilver absolutely necessary and obvious purchases for trainers in order to “catch em’ all”. That is why Pokemon Bank was so awesome for me, and made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I have no fear that the chain will be broken again, or anytime soon at least (don’t put it past Nintendo to sever the chain again and take away our backwards computability in order to sell more remakes and make more money, Yay Capitalism), but it means Gamefreak will have to make OR and AS more attractive and bring more to the table than just catching the Hoenne region’s Legendaries. Hopefully they ramp up the next group of remakes with more features…

Now I know Hoenne has lots of water (Lot’s of surfing). It would be great if the Pokemon you’re surfing on is visible in all its swimming glory, not just a black shadow (Think Lapras in X&Y, but with any water Pokemon). In fact, just allow trainers to have the choice to have your lead Pokemon follow, like in HG/SS. Why did they ditch that anyway? Maybe a more detailed and enjoyable diving process (Since we haven’t been able to dive SINCE Gen 3), loved your ideas on secret bases and room customization. I’m thinking similar to Animal Crossing with Pokemon themed decorations and friend visiting. Pokemon Contests aren’t really my thing, but I am willing to give them a try if they improve on those as well. Maybe making Mega Stones as rewards to the victors. I am expecting tons of new Hoenne Megas too and hopefully some of the more popular from Gen 5 and 6 will get Megas. Those generations deserve Megas too! Thanks again for the shout out in the episode.

Take care and thanks for helping us “Be the Very Best”

  3. I think it would be really cool if Alpha Saphire and Omega Ruby let you travel back to Johto and Kanto. I don’t think it’s likely but it would be awesome if you could travel between the three classic maps. I also want to see Mega evolutions for all three starters in Gen 3.

  4. I have an idea for what the titles omega ruby and alpha sapphire might mean. Alpha is the beginning and omega is the end. Groudon and kyogre used there incredible powers to rase the land and oceans which first created our world in the beginning hence the alpha. There powers were catastrophic and for a time there were raging storms and harsh drouts, but in the end they created the pokemon world we know and love today. The 2 evil teams Aqua and Magma respectively want to rase one of the legendary pokemon to make the world just land or just sea. If you played Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald then you know that once they pokemon Groudon and Kyogre are awoken they begin to destroy the world. This leads the evil teams to finally realize that although Groudon’s and Kyogre’s power created the world their powers if fully awoken would bring the world to an end. This is where the Omega comes into play. Groudon and Kyogre created the world in the beginning, and they will be the pokemon who will inevidably bring the world to an end. That is how I think that the Omega and Alpha have a role in the story of the games.

  5. By the way red and blue orbs will make groudon and kyrogrue primal in battle if captured. And pokemon red and blue have came out in the nintendo eShop for 3ds and 2ds.
