Fish Plays Pokémon

In the shadow of the Twitch Plays Pokémon phenomenon, a new idea has been born – Fish Plays Pokémon. A betta fish named Grayson Hopper has been tasked with the tremendous effort of playing through Pokémon Red version.

Using a 3×3 tiled screen overlay which represents all of the buttons on a traditional Nintendo Game Boy (Up, Down, Left, Right, A, B, Start and Select) and a motion capture camera, this little fish is slowly playing though the game. Every time the fish swims around its bowl and enters a different tile on the screen, the motion detector translates that into a button press and moves the Trainer in the game. As of this post, this little fish has logged over 135 hours of game play. So far, it has chosen a Charmander named AAAABBK and already has defeated the rival’s Squirtle.

As for the masterminds behind Fish Plays Pokémon, they are both developers from the HackNY Fellows Class of 2014. Catherine and Patrick are students at the University of Chicago and Columbia University, respectively.
