A Wild Nuzlocke Appeared! All About the Pokemon Nuzlocke Challenge – FSPR62

The Nuzlocke Challenge is an interesting set of self-imposed rules to follow while playing a Pokémon game to significantly increase its difficulty.

What is the Nuzlocke Challenge?

Originally, the challenge was created by a UC Santa Cruz student in 2010 because he was bored of the “repetitive and unchallenging” playthroughs of his old Pokémon games and wanted “to make the experience more interesting.” He, notably, restarted an old Ruby version game and fashioned two simple rules to follow along his Hoenn journey.

It is said that those who embark on the Nuzlocke Challenge in their Pokémon games start to care more about the Pokémon they capture because if they faint, it means you will never see them again. This challenge also encourages players to use Pokémon that they have never used before on their Pokémon journeys.

The original creator of the Nuzlocke Challenge also drew a comic of his adventure and posted it on the 4chan /v/ideogame board, where it was met with surprising approval.

Nuzlocke Challenge Rules

These are the original and considered the “official” rules of the Nuzlocke Challenge.

  • You must catch the first Pokémon encountered in an area, and nothing else. If the wild Pokémon flees or faints, you have no more chances of catching a Pokémon in that area again. If your first encounter is a Double Battle in dark grass, you can choose which Pokémon you would like to capture.
  • Any Pokémon that faints is considered deceased and must be released.

There are other optional rules that Trainers have created over time to add more of a challenge to the already difficult Nuzlocke Challenge. These rules include, but are no limited to, banning the use of Held Items, disallowing the capture and use of Legendary Pokémon and using the same amount of Pokémon as the opponent during a Gym battle or rival battle.

Pokémon of the Episode: #275 Shiftry

Shiftry is the Wickid Pokémon. It can have the Abilities Chlorophyll, Early Bird or the Hidden Ability Pickpocket. It stands at 4’03” (1.3m) tall and weighs 131.4 pounds (59.6kg). Shiftry is Grass- and Dark-Type.

Seedot evolves into Nuzleaf at level 14, then evolves into Shiftry with a Leaf Stone.

  1. The ‘N’ nuzlocke. Basic nuzlocke rules, BUT you cannot evolve you pokemon you catch.
After you defeat a gym, you must release all the pokemon in your party and use pokemon you have in your PC.

        • Yes, true. I didn’t realize what you meant before. N did kind of play by his own variation of Nuzlocke rules – catching Pokémon in a nearby Route and using them for a short period of time then releasing them immediately.

It would be something interesting to try out. it would make things very challenging.

  2. Hey Austin and Jaye (specifically Austin):

Check out the Nuzlocke Challenge on Bulbapedia. I’ve checked it out myself and there’s LOTS of optional rules.

    • Levi, thank you for your comment. And yes, there are a lot of optional rules for Nuzlocke Challenges. I’ve even thought of making up my own and playing through my own Nuzlocke Challenge.
