What is the definition of a gamer?

Everyone has their own personal definition of a gamer and it changes with time. We were once called “nerds” or “geeks”. Gamers now come in all shapes, sizes, and we play all different types of games.

In this episode of Pokedex Radio, I discuss my personal definition of what a gamer truly is.

I don’t think there is a true solid definition for the term “gamer”. We are all gamers in one definition of the word or another. Regardless of what you play, how often you play, or on what system (handheld, console, smartphone, etc), we can all probably fall under some vague definition of a gamer.

Personal preference of one game over another does not prove yourself as a gamer. I use myself as an example in this episode and say that I prefer the Tekken series of games over the Mortal Kombat series. Personally, I don’t see anything wrong with this, but many of you probably just unsubscribed from this podcast and blog. I still enjoy Mortal Kombat, but I would just prefer playing one over the other because I am more comfortable with playing Tekken, a game that I have played since I was a child, than Mortal Kombat, a game that I have only played a handful of times.

I feel that a “true” gamer is someone who has passion for a game. Obviously, I have a passion for the Pokemon video game series, so I write this blog and record the Pokedex Radio podcast on a (sort of) weekly basis. Using this parameter, I would definitely consider myself a gamer.

Take a listen to this episode to hear what I think of the certain parameters of what a gamer is. Like I mentioned before, these parameters are fluid and change over time. Would you consider yourself a gamer?
