The Nintendo Wii mini is a significantly reduced version of the Nintendo Wii console. The Nintendo Wii mini retails for the low price of $99.99 and is bundled with Mario Kart Wii. The new console is red, which looks very nice, and includes a red Wii Remote Plus and red Nunchuk.

The Wii mini is a very bare bones version of the Nintendo Wii. Much of the Wii’s features and capabilities have been stripped down to accommodate a significantly lower price. The idea of budget gaming that Nintendo always brings to the gaming community is very refreshing.

Unfortunately, I do have to bring this up – here are some of the features and capabilities that have notably been removed to justify the Wii mini’s lower price:

  • Lacks Wi-Fi capabilities (really?)
  • Does not play Wii U games
  • Can not use Wii U accessories
  • Does not play GameCube games
  • Does not have an SD card slot
  • Lacks HDMI output

I don’t understand why Nintendo decided to leave out Wi-Fi capabilities when designing Wii mini. For a budget console, you’d think that’s one thing they would leave in. Keeping it in would allow players to purchase and play Wii games AND potentially purchase games from the Nintendo eShop.

With all the negative points of the Wii mini, I think it is a great purchase if you want to purchase a low cost video game system for the holiday season. It promotes low budget gaming, which is amazing these days. You can’t walk down the street these days without having to shell out money for something.

The Wii mini was originally released in Canada on Dec. 7, 2012, and in Europe on March 15, 2013.
